Fiji's deposed President Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara suffered a stroke while on a visit to Vanuatu and was last night reported to be fighting for his life.
A radio report in Suva said Mara, aged 81, was admitted to the Port Vila Central Hospital on the south Pacific island after the
5.30 pm attack.
Mara was deposed as President two weeks after rebels took over Fiji's Parliament on May 19 last year, taking hostage Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry's Government.
He was forced to step aside on May 29 after threats were made on his life.
Since then Mara has retired to his island home of Lau, although his health has been poor and he was known to have a heart pacemaker.
