Golden showers, Russian sex workers and allegations of hotel romps were all included in James Comey's memos.

But the accounts of his private conversations also revealed a softer side to President Donald Trump.

The former FBI director's memos revealed two separate instances in which Mr Trump brought up the golden showers dossiers — both times expressing concern not for his own reputation, but for even a small chance his wife might think it were true, reports News.com.au.

"He repeated that it was a complete fabrication and 'fake news'," Comey wrote in one memo. "He said it bothered him if his wife thought there was even a one per cent chance it was true in any respect."

He also denied claims that he'd had any encounters with Russian sex workers during his Miss Universe trip.

"He said he had spoken to people who had been on the Miss Universe trip with him and they had reminded him that he didn't stay over night in Russia for that.

"He said he arrived in the morning, did events, then showered and dressed for the pageant at the hotel ... and left for the pageant. Afterwards, he returned only to get his things because they departed for New York by plane that same night."

He brought up the "Golden Showers thing" again on two other occasions.

In one case, according to Comey, he "said it really bothered him if his wife had any doubt about it".

He also said "the hookers thing" was "nonsense", but added that Putin had told him "we have some of the most beautiful hookers in the world".

In a private phone call on March 30, 2017, he insisted he had nothing to do with Russia. He said he was not involved with hookers in Russia, saying: "Could you imagine me, hookers? I have a beautiful wife, and it has been very painful."

The uncharacteristically affectionate references show a softer side to Mr Trump's relationship with his wife Melania, amid reports the pair are suffering a strained marriage in the wake of the porn star scandal.

Adult film star Stormy Daniels, who was paid $130,000 in hush money by Mr Trump's lawyer to keep quiet about their alleged 2006 affair, gave a much-publicised interview last month with CNN's Anderson Cooper.

The White House has said President Trump has denied having an affair with Daniels. However she said the flirtatious exchanges went on while he was married to Melania, before they eventually had sex in Mr Trump's hotel suite.

Shortly afterwards Stephanie Grisham, a spokesman for the First Lady, issued a statement saying the 47-year-old is "focused on being a mum and is quite enjoying spring break at Mar-a-Lago while working on future projects".

But last month a source told Us Weekly that Ms Trump is horrified that "all eyes are on her relationship with her husband". "It's not an easy time for her," the source said.

Another family insider added: "She is very, very unhappy with her life. If she could, she would get away from Donald and just be with her son."

Mrs Trump has remained silent on the claims by Daniels and former Playboy model Karen McDougal that they had sexual relationships with the President.
