Dogs in French animal refuge beaten with iron bars

Dozens of dogs in a French animal refuge were badly hurt yesterday after an overnight attack in intruders beat them with iron bars.

The attackers broke through doors and opened cages to get at some of the 145 dogs being kept at the Society for the Protection of Animals centre in Azereix.

A worker said that given the amount of blood on the floor, it appeared attack dogs were also used.

She said the animals were traumatised.
