Divorce clue to monastery rampage

A divorce grudge against the Roman Catholic Church may have sparked a fatal shooting rampage at a Benedictine monastery this week.

Authorities said Lloyd Robert Jeffress, 71, who killed two monks then committed suicide in Conception Abbey in Conception, Missouri, had a long-held grudge over his divorce.

Jeffress was a Baptist when he married in 1954 but he and his wife later converted to Catholicism. They legally divorced in 1959. But the Church does not recognise divorce, so Jeffress later sought an annulment, but officials said this could be a long and painful process.
