Disgraced peer Lord Archer looks set to lose his right to sit in Britain's Parliament - and may even be stripped of his title - under legislation to be passed in the coming year, it was reported yesterday.
Constitutional Affairs Secretary Lord Falconer said a bill in November's Queen's Speech could
bring the House of Lords in line with the Commons, where MPs sentenced to 12 months or more in jail are barred from sitting, according to the Sunday Telegraph.
The change could be included in a bill to reform the Upper House by removing the remaining 92 hereditary peers and moving the law lords into a new Supreme Court.
"If you are a member of Parliament you lose your right to sit and vote. Why should it be different in the Lords?"
He said the Government was willing to make the legislation retrospective, to cover Lord Archer, who was released from jail last week after serving half of a four-year sentence for perjury and attempting to pervert the course of justice.
