Danish tourist bitten by freshwater crocodile in Australia

A Danish backpacker bitten by a freshwater crocodile in WA's far north said the attack was "the result of me being stupid".

Johnny Bonde, 27, said he was trying to get close enough to the 2.5m crocodile to take a photograph when he slipped and fell on top of the creature at Lake Kununurra.

The Dane said he holds no hard feelings against the croc.

"It was the result of me being stupid," he said. "I pretty much body slammed him.

"If somebody body slammed me at night, I would be angry too."

The tourist said he was walking back from the Kimberley town's Speedway on Friday night when he spotted the "freshie" - which rarely attack people - and couldn't resist trying to get a souvenir photo.

"I just wanted to get a bit closer, it was laying on the bottom of the bank," Bonde told The Sunday Times yesterday from Kununurra District Hospital.

"Then my foot slipped and I fell onto the crocodile. He got my arm and shook me."

Bonde said his arm felt weird and when he made his way out of the bank, he noticed a lot of blood.

Despite the injuries, Bonde walked back to the caravan park where he was staying with his girlfriend, Kirsty Jacobs.

"I tried to brush it off a bit, but then it kept bleeding," he said. "My girlfriend was a bit worried."

Bonde was then taken to hospital, where he was treated for deep lacerations in his forearm.

He was expected to be released from hospital the following night.

He has been in Australia for just over a year and met his British girlfriend while exploring WA.

Bonde said the incident was a "just a little setback" and would not get in the way of the couple's plans to travel up to Darwin.
