WILLEMSTAD, Curacao (AP) A man found dead in his jail cell in Curacao has a connection to the slaying of an opposition lawmaker.
The Justice Ministry says in a statement that Luigi Florentina appears to have hanged himself at the Barber police station. The 27-year-old was suspected of killinga suspect in the slaying of lawmaker Herman Wiels.
The man Florentina was accused of killing was one of two men suspected of gunning down Wiels at a beach and then fleeing in a car.
An autopsy of Florentina was scheduled for Monday to confirm the cause of death. He had recently been moved from a military barracks.
Wiels was leader of the Sovereign People Party and his slaying shocked many in the southern Caribbean island. Another suspect in the slaying is in custody.
