A report by ABC7 identified the victim as 31-year-old Brian Fields, who friends say is better known as Sugar Ray.
A friend of his mother Sharon Fields posted to Facebook her shock over the incident.
Shantaile-BossLady Henderson wrote: "Family N friends please help me pray for the Pore and Fields Family."
Timothy Pore is believed to be the victim's father. He also shared a Facebook post writing: "GM friends and family I would like to thank everyone for prayers for my son Shugknight The Master is in the miracle working business today he's going to work a another one I testify prayers work, so please keep praying."
Brian's mom told the Tribune that prior to the shooting, her son who was visiting from out of town, met her at a gas station near the corner store.
She said her son got a phone call from a friend and he agreed to meet the friend around the corner where he was shot.
Anthony Guglielmi, the Police Department's chief spokesman, said on Friday that the shooting may have been a retaliation against the victim who was convicted of murder in 2009 or it was gang related. Police also said they are confident that the video is not a hoax.
In the video Brian stands outside a closed convenience store he says is about to be opened for him to hide in, at the intersection of 56th Street and Hoyne Avenue.
Brian wears a White Sox baseball cap jokes that it needs to open to give him 'somewhere to duck and hide for cover' in the West Englewood neighborhood which is populated by gangs.
He spins around capturing his surroundings including another man taking a drink and someone coming out of the store.
Loud gunshots are then heard as Brian drops his phone on the pavement after being struck by a flurry of bullets.
The mobile amazingly captures the gunman race into view firing at least 16 shots as the man tries to escape.
After a brief pause a person out of sight is heard saying he will take the victim to hospital as the victim's mother screams in terror.
A Chicago Police spokesperson told The New York Daily News that a 31-year-old man was shot at the same intersection at 4.48pm on Thursday March 31.
The man suffered multiple gunshot wounds and is in a critical condition in Mount Sinai Hospital. His shooter fled in a car. His mother told the Tribune that he's on a ventilator in the intensive care unit. He was shot in his jaw, back, stomach and legs.

The city is expected to witness over 500 homicides for only the second time since 2008.
There have been 135 homicides already this year, a 71 per cent jump from 2015.
In the first three months of 2016 over 700 people have been shot, a 73 per cent rise on this time last year.
On the same day the 31-year-old was gunned down another nine people had also been struck and two people killed.
