Britain's firefighters call off strike

Britain's firefighters have called off an eight-day strike which would have forced the Army to take to the streets in antiquated fire engines for the third time in less than a month.

The Fire Brigades Union cancelled the strike after the intervention of the national conciliation service Acas, which has brokered deals to resolve some notorious disputes in UK labour history.
