Britain is having a frosty start to 2017, as temperatures fall below zero bringing snow and sleet as far south as the Chilterns.
A band of cold weather could see the mercury drop to its coldest point this winter, with forecasters predicting possible lows of -7C or beyond in Walesand the Highlands.
Most of the country will see much colder conditions from tomorrow as a wintry front moves from the North.
But the falling temperatures are unlikely to trouble the record books. The coldest temperature ever see in Britain at New Year was in Braemer Aberdeenshire in 1962, when -18.5C was observed.
Yellow weather warnings were issued by the Met Office for ice on the roads overnight and today across Yorkshire, the North, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Met Office forecaster Charles Powell said: "It will turn cold for all of us. We've got some rain, sleet and snow showers to contend with. We'll see some accumulations of snow across Scotland and even down to the Chilterns and moors.
"Not only will it be a frosty start to the week but there will be some icy stretches to contend with. But a good deal of sunshine. Staying wintry and a colder feeling day for all. Do wrap up warm if you want to head out."
Public Health England also issued warnings about the upcoming cold weather which is expected to last until Wednesday. People were advised to set their home temperature to at least 18C, keep an eye on elderly neighbours and stay tuned to weather forecasts.
