One witness said: "I just saw the plane lose its right wing in mid-flight and crash. I heard a massive bang. I didn't see anyone escape with a parachute."
Another witness said: "The plane flew over my house and I saw pieces fall from it. Then the airplane pitched, and nose dived, crashing about 200 yards away."
Three parachutes were found near the crash site. No one was hurt on the ground.
The mayor of Fernelmont, Jean-Claude Nihoul, confirmed that the skydivers 'were not able to jump out in time.'
"It is a tragedy like we have never known," he added.
Belgium's Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo said his thoughts were with the families of the victims.
