CANBERRA - Treasurer Peter Costello has made it clear he supports the current Liberal team going into the federal election, Health Minister Tony Abbott said today.
And the senior cabinet members who met last week to consider the leadership question have put aside any doubts and anxieties theymay have had about Prime Minister John Howard, he said.
"Peter has made it absolutely crystal clear that he supports the team," Mr Abbott told the Nine Network.
"It's greatly to his credit that he has and I think everything that Peter has done over the last six months has enhanced his standing with his colleagues."
Mr Abbott said Mr Howard would lead the party to the election.
"Yes he will. No ifs no buts, he will lead the party to the election," he said.
Mr Abbott said there would be no challenge to Mr Howard's leadership at this morning's Liberal Party meeting.
