Australian ID card inquiry

The Australian Government will set up an inquiry into whether the country should have a national identity card.

Attorney-General Philip Ruddock cited national security and fraud prevention as key factors. He said the debate had moved on from whether Australia needed a national ID card to what information it should contain, what legislation was needed and how much it would cost.
