Australia will increase by 30 its troop numbers in Afghanistan

Australia will increase by 30 its troop numbers in Afghanistan, taking to 300 the number of defence personnel in advisory roles.

Defence Minister Marise Payne announced the rise during a Senate estimates hearing in Canberra today.

"Given the centrality of Afghanistan in the global fight against terrorism, an enhanced Australian contribution to the resolute support mission is both timely and appropriate," Senator Payne said.
