SYDNEY - A man shot by police officers in suburban Sydney has died of his wounds.
 
Police at the scene of the shooting on Wednesday confirmed that the 36-year-old man was dead.
 
Neighbours have told media the man was shot in the chest.
 
About 8.45am (AEDT) on Wednesday police were
         called to a home on Wangee Road at Lakemba in Sydney's southwest.
 
"Upon arrival police found the man attempting self-harm," police said earlier in a statement.
 
"There was a confrontation between the man and police where the man was subsequently shot by attending officers."
 
The man was taken to Canterbury Hospital where he later died.
 
A crime scene has been established at the house as police from Marrickville investigate the shooting.
