A magnitude 6.5 earthquake has struck off Indonesia this morning, the United States Geological Survey reports.
The quake hit at 12.55am local time (4.55am NZT), 99km southwest of Medan, Sumatra, at a depth of 110km.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said a destructive tsunami is not expected.
Phone calls to
residents in Singkilbaru, an area believed to have been badly rattled by the quake, have so far gone unanswered.
Indonesia straddles a series of fault lines that make the vast island nation prone to volcanic and seismic activity.
