1.2 million 'attending' girl's birthday after Facebook invite mix-up

A Mexican teenager might regret inviting people to her birthday party on Facebook after 1.2 million people said they would attend.

Rubi Ibarra Garcia is turning 15, and her parents uploaded a video to the social media site inviting people to the celebration.

Her family admitted they only intended to invite their friends and neighbours, but the clip went viral after the post was made public, the BBC reports.

"Hello, how are you?" the girl's father, Crescencio Ibarra, says in the video. "We invite you this December 26 to the 15th birthday party of our daughter."

In an interview on Good Evening with Raquel Bigorra, he added [translated]: "Everyone is invited, everyone who wants to come."

Her mother said: "If you can come to sing, to honour us with your presence and your voice ... [you are] welcome."

There will be three bands, a horse race with a cash prize and even VIP tickets for the event.

The birthday girl wrote on Facebook that she thought it was "funny" the video had gone viral, but admitted to having concerns about the amount of people attending amid confusion about it possibly being cancelled.

She explained [translated]: "The 15th birthday is without doubt, for all Mexican women, an event that we crave before our wedding because it's the best thing that can happen in life.

"At first I thought it was very funny, but I think it [is] out of control ... I don't know why people thought it was all of Mexico invited."
