Pahiatua Railcar journey through Manawatū Gorge


Pahiatua Railcar Society's RM31 with passengers, going through the Manawatu Gorge, with the new bridge for the Manawatū-Tararua Highway being built at the Ashhurst end. Then, approaching the Woodville end of the Manawatū Gorge. Here, the longest wooden truss bridge in the Southern Hemisphere once stood. Construction of the 7.2km long railway line through the Manawatū Gorge started in 1886.
