In 2014, I was living in London about to come home to New Zealand after being away for two years. I hadn't been to Italy, which was on my list of must-dos. So, I booked myself a 10-day trip around Italy. I started in Florence then went to Venice,then Rome and ended up at a friend's family home in Ostuni, down in Apulia. I thought travelling by myself might be boring or freaky but it was the best decision ever. I spent my days walking around seeing everything I wanted to, buying things from markets I didn't need, speaking terrible Italian and eating long lunches with lots of wine. I highly recommend travelling solo as you learn a lot.

My friends and I once booked a tour around the Greek Islands. The tour was for young people who liked to party, so the focus was on a lot of pub crawls as opposed to sight-seeing. One night we were on the island of Ios and one of the young Kiwi men on our tour decided to get a tattoo from a very dodgy-looking late-night tattoo parlour. We were pretty shocked and impressed when he came out with a swollen mouth and had chosen to get "Chur" tattooed on the inside of his bottom lip, and "Bro" tattooed on the inside of his top lip. It's a pretty great memory for me but that poor guy had a rather silent and painful few pub crawls after that.
