California's Coachella Festival is on many bucket lists. Photo / Supplied

With so many great festivals around the world, it can difficult to choose just one. We've picked six of the best — so get planning.

Coachella

Where: Indio, California
When: April 15-24

A star-studded event - both on and off-stage - that draws in crowds of hipsters and girls with flowers in their hair, Coachella is a festival on a lot of bucket lists. Established in 1999, it's held at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California, located in the Inland Empire's Coachella Valley in the Colorado Desert. With so many celebrities in attendance, who knows who you might end up brushing shoulders with in the crowd.

As it's one of the first festivals before the Northern Hemisphere summer, Coachella tends to be ahead of the trends, scoring big reunion gigs and long-awaited comebacks. LCD Soundsystem, Guns N' Roses and Calvin Harris headline the festival this year.

Primavera Sound

Where: Barcelona, Spain
When: June 2-4, 2016

This annual music festival takes place in Barcelona, Spain from June 2-4. It's one of the largest music festivals in Spain and offers an eclectic array of genres, with a focus on independent music. Everything is outdoors and there's very little shade, so make sure you're well protected from the sun.

While the line-up has yet to be announced, previous performers include Lou Reed, the Pixies, Patti Smith, Blur and Tame Impala.

Fuji Rock, Japan

Where: Naeba, Japan
When: July 22-24, 2016

For the more head-banging festival-goer, look no further than Japan's Fuji Rock. It's Japan's largest festival and it's quite unique - getting to one particular stage requires a 20-minute cable-car ride up a mountain. It's located in a ski resort on Mount Fuji, with incredibly beautiful surroundings, no queues for beer, hot spring baths and clean camping.

Highlight of the year, bring them to this festival! 🙏🏿#cheers2015 #fujirock #lastpost2015 #mawarshaatrip

Again, no line-up announcement just yet, but last year's acts included the Foo Fighters, Muse, Todd Rundgren and FKA Twigs.

Montreux Jazz Festival

Where: Montreux, Switzerland
When: July 1-16, 2016

Held every July, Montreux is one of the most famous and long-running jazz festivals in the world. This year mark its 50th anniversary, a very impressive milestone. Many jazz greats have played here over the years, including Ella Fitzgerald and Miles Davis. However, it's not all jazz - blues and rock performers also make appearances. The festival was originally held at the Montreux Casino, until it was burned to the ground during a performance by Frank Zappa in 1971.

The program is released on April 14, with tickets on sale the next day.

Lollapalooza, Chicago

Where: Grant Park, Chicago
When: July 28-31, 2016

The best festival for those who remember the 90s - it was here in 1995 that Courtney Love punched Kathleen Hanna of Bikini Kill for allegedly making a snide remark about her daughter Frances Bean. This year, the festival reaches a milestone 25-year anniversary. As well as musical performances, there's comedy, dance and crafts, with the festival attracting more than 160,000 visitors.

This year the festival has been extended to four days, with the lineup yet to be announced. Last year's festival was headlined by Paul McCartney, Metallica and Florence and the Machine.

Sziget

Where: Budapest, Hungary
When: August 10-17

This festival takes place on an island in the centre of Budapest - dubbed "The Island of Freedom" for the occasion. It's one of the largest music and culture festivals in Europe, with non-stop parties, concerts and circus demonstrations. There's more than 50 venues showcasing about 200 events a day - so there's bound to be something for everyone.

Artists on this year's line-up include Bloc Party, Chvrches and Sigur Ros - with more announcements to come.
