While we love a lazy getaway as much as the next person, we also love taking the rare opportunity to immerse ourselves in new cultures when travelling. And it seems we're not the only ones – Booking.com research reveals that 52 per cent of Kiwis say experiencing new cultures is top of their list while overseas.

However, us intrepid Kiwis won't settle for any old tourist-heavy cultural attraction. Forty per cent of New Zealand travellers state that being able to experience a lesser-known, more authentic cultural spot would truly make their holiday.

Luckily for you, we've done the research and found some places that fit the bill.

Selaron Steps, Brazil

Avoid the crowds and admire the vivid mosaics and artwork of famous artist Jorge Selaron at this picturesque staircase. This is a true representation of Brazil's love for vibrant colours and artistic expression. The colourful stairs will have you mesmerised - and make for perfect Instagram content.

Little Havana, Miami

Miami is more than its usual image of trendy South Beach, downtown parties and glamorous rooftop bars. Soak up the rich Cuban influence and visit Little Havana - be sure to stop by the authentic Augustin Gainza Arts and Tavern. Not only is it one of Miami's greatest artists' studios, you can also dig in to some tasty tapas and wine - what more could you want?

Standing Stones of Stenness, Scotland

England's prehistoric Stonehenge monument is one of the most well-known and accessible wonders of the world. However, the Standing Stones of Stenness in Scotland (tongue twister, we know) is thought to be the oldest henge site in the British Isles. Skip the queues and visit this not-so-famous — but oh-so-impressive — cultural wonder instead.

Dazu Rock Carvings, China

If you're after some seriously ancient aesthetics, the Dazu Rock Carvings in China date back as far as the 9th Century. This series of Chinese religious sculptures located in Chongqing are 1200 years old, yet have withheld their form remarkably. They provide outstanding evidence of the harmonious synthesis of Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism.
