Plane landing 'bounce' goes viral - but according to British Airways, it's not that 'insane'

Video of a scary plane landing – where the aircraft appears to 'bounce' on the runway at Heathrow – has gone viral on social media.

Big Jet TV posted the video on its Twitter account last week, describing the landing, which occurred as the brutal Storm Erik lashed the UK, as "insane".

"We are live now on our Elite Channel from #Heathrow and witnessed this insane #TOGA !" it wrote. "Well done pilot!"

According to tracking website FlightAware, the flight – British Airways 276 – arrived 18 minutes late, after flying in from Hyderabad in India.

In tweets replying to Big Jet TV, many expressed admiration for the pilot's handling of the situation.

"Excellence and professionalism in the air," one person tweeted. "Absolute skill and focus."

However, according to British Airways, the moves seen in the incident were simply standard procedure.

"Our highly skilled pilots regularly train to conduct the standard maneuver known as a 'go around,' " British Airways told USA TODAY in a statement. "The aircraft circled the airport and landed safely."

Ady Dolan, an air traffic controller at Heathrow who replied to the tweet, reinforced this.

"A well-flown missed approach, nothing 'insane' just a perfectly normal procedure used when the aircraft is not correctly positioned for a safe landing," he wrote. "Trained for by pilots and ATC alike."

The video has since been viewed over 4 million times on Twitter.
