Delta Air Lines is trialling a new food service on its international flights with economy customers getting restaurant-style three-course meals with cocktails.

The Atlanta-based carrier is testing out the new service on flights between Portland, Oregon, and Tokyo, MailOnline Travel reports.

If the trial proves popular, Delta could roll out the concept to all of its international flights by the end of the year.

According to the Chicago Business Journal, the new service sees passengers in the economy cabin served each course separately.

Before the meal service begins those on board are offered "welcome bubbles", which includes a choice of three Bellinis or a sparkling soft drink.

Each passenger is also handed a printed menu detailing their choices with dishes that could include a quinoa salad as a starter, a main course of pasta with cauliflower in a cream sauce and a dessert of Häagen-Dazs ice cream.

Rather than the usual meal trays, the food is served on white dishes and passengers are also given white cloth napkins rather than paper.

And although the cutlery is still made from plastic, it is described as being more robust and sleek.

A spokesman for the airline told MailOnline Travel: "Delta constantly listens to customer feedback and is now testing innovative ways to make our culinary experience on board feel more like dining at a favourite restaurant.

"As part of that we are conducting a test on select international flights where flight attendants will deliver an enhanced main cabin dining experience that we'll use to gather customer feedback."

However, the new menu is not the only thing on board Delta cabins that have been updated.

The airline has also rolled out new premium economy seats and added more Delta One business class suites to its fleet.

Meanwhile earlier this year, over 60,000 Delta Air Lines employees across the world were kitted out with new uniforms by top designer Zac Posen.

The new uniforms see Delta's traditional red, white and blue infused with new hues, which have been dubbed "passport plum" (purple), "cruising cardinal" (red) and "ground speed graphite" (grey).
