Given that it takes just 2 1/2 hours to get to one of New Caledonia's postcard-perfect beaches, it is little wonder the number of New Zealanders heading there for a holiday has increased by more than 30 per cent.

New Caledonia Tourism believes an increased awareness of the Pacific isles' proximity to New Zealand is the main reason behind the growth in tourism.

Value-added packages and a more extensive air service have also helped lure New Zealanders.
