What was your greatest holiday? When I was young I lived with a Brazilian family aboard a yacht. We keptin touch and I'd always wanted to visit them, so a few years back I took three months off and travelled through Brazil. I spent a month of my time there sailing around the northern coast and over to Fernando De Noronha, which was unreal. Brazil is so vast and diverse that three months wasn't enough time to get to even half of the places I would have liked, but having friends there opened up opportunities and experiences I otherwise wouldn't have had.
And the worst? As a teenager, spending 10 days of a family sailing holiday stuck in Whangaroa Harbour. After a week of stormy weather things got so claustrophobic we resorted to sitting out in the dinghy, which was half full of rainwater, just to get some time away.
If we could teleport you to one place in NZ for a week-long holiday, where would it be? For me Great Barrier Island has everything. Surf, beautiful harbours and bays, sensational bush walks, amazing native wildlife and some of the hardiest and most ingenious locals.
How about for a dream holiday internationally? Cruising on a yacht through Croatia, Italy and Greece.
What's the best travel tip you've ever been given? Don't stress the small stuff.
What was the most memorable meal you've had while travelling? Strange for a vegetarian to say this but it was at a barbecue rib place when I was in Austin, Texas for work. We were starving and the group decided to go to this place — they made me a smoked chilli chickpea dish which was incredible.
What's the best thing you've brought back from a trip? Inspiration for cooking!
Favourite airport to land at? Auckland. It means I'm home and I get to see my family.
What's the next trip you have planned? Planning a week in the Bay of Islands with my partner and our son on the family boat before summer is through.
