One enterprising New Yorker figured out how to make quick buck off the blizzard that's hit the city's tourism industry hard.

Taking advantage of the excessive snowfall during Storm Jonas, Brooklyn resident Patrick Horton sculpted a cozy igloo in his backyard - and listed it on Airbnb for $200 a night.

Described as a "Boutique Winter Igloo for 2", the tongue-in-cheek listing bragged of the building's craftsmanship.

"Dripping with ingenuity and alt-lifestyle aura lays this Snowpocalypse's most desirable getaway," it read.

"Built completely by hand. all natural. Come experience this chic dome-style bungalow with Bae."

While Airbnb seemed to enjoy Horton's effort, they quickly pulled the ad saying it didn't meet their occupancy guidelines.

"We are happy to see that you guys are staying busy and having fun during Blizpocalypse," an Airbnb spokesman wrote to Horton.

"Unfortunately, your igloo, while very well constructed, has failed to meet our occupancy standards and has been removed from search results."

Mr Horton told Sky News that friends had been trying to take Tinder dates to the igloo.

"We learned this weekend that people actually really love igloos. We should have done it earlier.

"Plus it is nice that it keeps our beers cold when we are out there."

Fortunately, for anyone tempted at the prospect of spending an icy night in an igloo, there are still options.

The Iglu Village in Kuhtai, Austria offers unheated igloo accommodation with ski-to-door access and nearby thermal baths.

Prices are around $532 a night, with activities on offer including snow golf and Midnight Frisbee.
