Whangarei's ArtBeat on November 15 is a multicultural arts festival with an extensive performing arts programme. There is a kids' zone, a Pacific Village and ethnic cuisine stalls across two performance areas. It's at Cafler Park, 10am-4pm, and it's free.

The world in Waikato
Waikato's World Show is an entertainment extravaganza that gives a modern twist to the traditional agricultural show. As well as A&P show favourites - such as animal competitions, and rural displays and demonstrations - there'll be heaps of thrilling sideshows, many of which are free. It's at Claudelands Event Centre, October 31 to November 2, and runs 10am-4pm daily.

Northern gardens
Explore fabulous private gardens from Kerikeri to Tauranga Bay and Whangaroa on the Kerikeri Garden Safari, November 1-2. Gardens range from compact town sites to rambling country gardens with expansive views. Some gardens will provide refreshments. Gardens are open 9.30am-4.30pm both days, and tickets cost $20.
