Build your ultimate flying machine and test it at the Russell Birdman Festival on July 12 - or just watch clever and crazy entrants launch their inventions off Russell wharf. The party starts at 9.30am with a Big Dig, followed by kayak races, a spaghetti-eating competition among others,leading up to the Birdman Parade & Competition at 1pm. The man, the mountains The new Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre at Aoraki Mount Cook tells stories of the mountains through a state-of-the-art 3D cinema experience, a full dome digital planetarium, stargazing, a museum and the Hillary Gallery. A full day Explorer pass costs $20 (16 years+), $15 (seniors & students). Children free when accompanied by a paying adult. The cafe and bar have gorgeous views of Aoraki Mount Cook.

Ruapehu heats up The Mountain Mardi Gras kicks off at Ohakune Junction at 7pm on June 28, followed by six hours of music, rides, stalls and entertainment, including the Mardi Gras Fire & Fireworks display at 8.30pm.
