Forget the mile-high club, there's another exclusive hook-up scene in the skies. Photo / 123RF

We've all heard of the mile-high club, but it turns out another exclusive hook-up scene has been operating in the skies without our knowledge.

Luke* opened up to news.com.au about the time one of the cabin crew hit on him, during a budget flight from Melbourne to Sydney.

"As I got on the plane I made eyes with the flight attendant. She was the one who happened to be doing the safety briefing, immediately to my left, and she was really pretty.

"Throughout the flight, at some stage she came over just to chat. We talked about the book I was reading, which was the Anh Do biography. We did some cheeky flirting for a minute, if that, and she went off to do work duties. She walked by a couple of times after that, but she'd just smile and keep going.

"At the end of the flight, a male flight attendant stood directly in front of my row - I was in the exit row seats in the middle - to make sure that I was going to be the absolute last person off the plane, because I couldn't actually move. As I got up, he just directed me toward a particular exist, and lo and behold, there she was."

As he walked out the door, he said she stopped him and thanked him for flying. She shook his hand, but there was something in it. He went down the stairs and into the terminal before looking to see what it was.

"It was a chocolate bar with a note wrapped around. I was like, 'Oh, that's kind of cool'.

All it said was her name and phone number. It was definitely an ego boost for the day, although I was wearing my favourite outfit at the time, so maybe that helped.

"I think I messaged her that night, just complimenting her on her ballsiness, because seriously, kudos. We started talking, I was based in Sydney, she was based in Melbourne, and it became pretty quickly evident that we weren't going to be in the same place.

Luke was about to travel to America, and told news.com.au he didn't know if he'd be able to see her before he left.

"I was going skiing with some friends, so I thought, why not? I invited her along. I said, 'I don't know if I'm actually going to get to see you, so just come skiing with me'. This was only a couple of days after we started talking, maybe two weeks.

"So she came up, and we went on a road trip from Sydney to one of the mountains with all of my friends, including a whole bunch of heavy metal in the car, which was disgustingly bad.

The two guys up the front just made it the most awkward trip, I don't know if that was intentionally or just because that's what they did, but they love the heavy metal."

Mount Selwyn is about 500 kilometres from Sydney, and the group was staying near the mountain, at one of Luke's mate's mum's place.

"No-one at that stage actually knew who she was, so they just assumed we were a couple and we got chucked in the same bedroom. We hadn't even gotten a date yet, and my mate's mum just put us in the same bed - my mate's old bed, as it turned out."

Things progressed pretty quickly.

"We went skiing the next day. She wasn't a bad skier, very decent, I was a boarder though, you know, so it was never going to work out," he laughed.

"The weather was stunning, I paid for her boots and ski ticket, I thought that was the right thing to do since she'd flown up to Sydney and then gone on a ski trip with all my mates. I figured, yep, I'm sure I can do that.

"She's ridiculously outgoing, astonishingly so. We had a few drinks, there was a fire, and we walked around the farm. There was more heavy metal the next day, on the way home. It was semi-awkward, sort of lovely, we were holding hands.

"You know, you spend a weekend together on a weird-as spontaneous trip up to the snow, you're definitely going to be cute about it.

"We stayed at my place that night, when we got back to Sydney. She flew back the next day. We stayed in touch for a few days. She's a really, really cool chick."

However, it was not to be.

"Despite how incredibly courageous she'd been, and how awesome she was - just straight-up a great person to get along with - she would've been a great friend, but I didn't see anything happening romantically. And so rather than lead her on, I ended it within a week after she got back, saying exactly that. I think she understood.

"I don't think I talked to her or saw her again for at least a year, until suddenly when I was out with some mates - probably the same ones, actually - and I just bumped into her in a pub in Sydney. It was completely our of the blue. We caught up, had a quick chat.
