Having been open as a cafe for a couple of years and gaining a fan base of coffee lovers at this vintage style cafe and florist, the Storehouse is now open for tapas in the evenings, Thursday to Sunday. It's a real find. Literally.Hidden in the industrial part of Taupo by the car dealerships, it's well worth seeking out.
Victoria herself will most probably swing by your table and check that you're doing okay. And you will be. This is a great cafe for morphing from day to night, with all the hearty breakfast/bunch fare and cabinet by day, to burgers and ribs by night. I sat here for a couple of hours using their wifi and set up office on my last visit.
This gastropub has been highly recommended on social media. The chef is ex-Huka Lodge and the kitchen's fabulous creations are served up alongside a list of 57 craft beers - that's the biggest beer list in town.
Quite a departure from the rest, but it was within walking distance from our bach so we exercised our way here for coffee on the lake each morning. Boats can pull up to the floating jetty and order a flat white to go. But from lunchtime till late the pizza oven is puffing away so you can eat hot pizza on the lakeside or in their licensed cafe surrounded by tent sails and watch the sun set.
Arty types will love this place. It's a cafe set in an indoor-outdoor art gallery just out of Taupo at Acacia Bay, open Wednesday to Sunday. Sit among the zany art while you eat your creamy mushrooms and even buy a piece to take home to remind you of your Taupo vacation.
