Get an energetic start to the day and knock off some of the historical and cultural sights of the city on a cycle tour. Sri Lanka Day Tours offer a half-day trip that kicks off at 7am, exploring the history of Colombo with a knowledgable local guide — as well as refreshments. $80

After your cycle tour, you'll have built up a good appetite — so head to the bustling Kathiresan St, home to one of Colombo's biggest markets. Here you can eat like the locals do — one recommended spot is Mayura Hotel. Don't let the name fool you, as it's not actually a hotel, but a hole in the wall eatery. And you can get a tasty crab curry with rice for under $5.

Once you've had yourfill and had a good look at the market, walk to the nearby Old Dutch Hospital —a heritage building that's been turned into a shopping and dining precinct. You can enjoy a cup of what Sri Lanka's known for at the Dilmah T-Lounge — and get a sweet treat as well. $10

Next, take in Sri Lanka's history at the fantastic National Museum. Entry is only $2. After a good look around, take a stroll around Cinnamon Gardens — it's the city's prettiest neighbourhood, where some of its most elite residents live. At this point, you might be feeling like a little R and R—so make your way to Kemara Spa forarelaxing excursion. Treatments start at around $20 and there's plenty to choose from.

Once you're done, hail a tuk tuk and ride to MtLaviniaBeach — Sri Lanka is known for its incredible sunsets and this is one of the best places to take them in.

A good spot on the beach to enjoy more of Sri Lanka's amazing fresh seafood is KaemaSutra, which serves up local cuisine with a contemporary twist. Dinner and drinks will set you back around $40.

Have a walk along the beach and when you're ready for a nightcap, jump in another tuk tuk and ride to the Cinnamon Red hotel and unwind with a few drinks at the Cloud Red cocktail bar. It's Colombo's highestrooftop bar, with an extensive drinks menu and amazing views of the city and ocean. $30
