Dreading Christmas shopping? The Supporters of Tiritiri Matangi have the answer. Visit Tiritiri Matangi Island, shop at the supporters' store and take a guided walk round the island (free if you spend more than $50).
Over the hump
The Tuatapere Hump Ridge Track is now open,but only on weekends until December 15. Upcoming events include a 24-hour walking endurance event on February 3.
Garden glory
Cross Hills Gardens in Kimbolton, near Palmerston North, is ablaze with rhododendrons and azaleas during spring. On November 19, visit Cross Hills Country Fair, which boasts about 100 gift stalls. Entry is $10 (adult), under-16s free.
Coromandel celebrates the annual Pohutukawa Festival from November 18 to December 4. Events include the Dive Festival in Whitianga and a wine tour by launch along Pauanui's waterways.
