There are many reasons to pick one piece of accommodation over the next, including views from a hotel room, the quality of the restaurant and the proximity to the town centre.

But thanks to Airbnb, animal lovers can now add another condition to their list - some four legged friends.

For travellers who miss their own pets when they head off on vacation, there are a number of places on offer that can help to numb the pain.

They include horse ranches, city farms and cat ladies galore. Read on to find out more...

The owners of this farmhouse on a working farm homestead in the Driftless area of Wisconsin can accommodate up to three people a night.

Guests are welcome to get involved in the workings of the farm, which is home to sheep, goats, steers, chickens, ducks, dogs, hogs and cats, and can even learn to milk a goat if they like.

Their farm-to-table breakfasts even use what the farm hands pick from the fields, including over one hundred varieties of vegetables and fruit. And they also cook with their own pork, beef, lamb and eggs.

It is set on the edge of a restored prairie, next to an oak wood and a three-minute walk from the Pecatonica River and a trout stream.

They also teach classes in healthy cooking, gardening, spinning, dyeing, felting and soapmaking.

Circle M Market Farm B&B is available from $179 a night.

The owner Jodi says of the property: "We strive to provide something off the beaten path that's unique and positively stimulates thoughts towards envy and delight and gratitude."

Guests can pay $70 a night for a five-night minimum stay.

Animals on the farm include four horses, a pony, sheep, chickens, ducks, and a couple of turkeys.

Depending on the time of year, guests can also help with bottle feeding lambs, sheering sheep. harvesting the garden or collecting eggs.

Horses and ponies are also available to ride and there are plenty of wild deer, hawks, ducks in the canal and the occasional fox or raccoon to spot.

The owners can also schedule a day's ride at Antelope Island where the buffalo roam free, or a ride up the Mountains of Logan Canyon or Hardware where elk and moose are often spotted.

Breakfast dishes include strawberry cream cheese stuffed French toast, cheesy scrambled eggs and home-grown bacon and sausages.

Guests can pay $107 for a room per night.

Visitors to New York can now also get some down time with in a cat lover's paradise in the East Village.

Situated near the Nationaal Park de Weerribben, Giethoorn, and the famous Dutch tulip fields, it is on the edge of a beautiful unspoiled swamp area with the largest floating marsh forest in Europe.

They are a rescue centre for horses primarily, but also cats and dogs. Customers with their own horses are allowed to bring their animals to enjoy the local trails, but guests can also book one of the ranch's horses.
