Ask Away: Stopover in Buenos Aires

From Buenos Aires to winter in Europe, online expert, Eli Orzessek, finds the answers.

We have a three-night stopover in Buenos Aires in September before heading to Rio. How should we make the best use of our time - including eating?

I asked the experts over at Adventure World who tailor-make holidays throughout South America. With Air New Zealand's new service to Buenos Aires, more Kiwis are heading there.

For a three-night stopover, Adventure World's absolute must-do is a dinner and tango show at Esquina Carlos Gardel, closely followed by a half-day city tour taking in the history of Le Recoleta, the culture of La Boca and the famous Plaza de Mayo. Considered the heart of Buenos Aires' sport culture, La Bombonera Stadium is a must visit for any sports enthusiast.

Popular gastronomic suggestions are Cafe Tortoni for chocolate with churros; Don Julio in Palermo for a local steak, and wine tasting at La Cava del Querandi. You may already be taking in Iguazu Falls either side of your stopover.

Travel editor Winston Aldworth loved the city. "Make time for at least one great steak," he says. "It'll probably be the best of your life."

My wife and I love your article about Europe and white Christmases, this is something we have wanted to do for some time but can't get our heads around it.

I've had lots of queries about heading to Europe for a white Christmas! It's definitely something on my bucketlist as well - I've only ever been over in the height of summer.

Keep in mind that you're not guaranteed a white Christmas just by heading to Europe in winter - the higher you go, the better chance of snow. Northern Scandinavia is good place to start - Helsinki, Finland is great for reindeer-spotting, I've heard.

Even if it doesn't snow, you're bound to be enchanted by the many Christmas markets you'll come across.

House of Travel Ponsonby's Glenn Warrington recommends making a day trip from Copenhagen to the amazing Tivoli Christmas market. The markets run from Nov 9 to Dec 28 and feature gorgeous restaurants and roller coaster rides, toboggan rides and ice sculptures. There are also markets along the canals at Nyhavn and Christiania, with plenty of pubs and restaurants for evening entertainment.

He recommends celebrating New Year's Eve in Amsterdam, with the biggest party taking place at Museum Square from 6pm. Lots of local musicians perform throughout the night and there is an incredible fireworks display at midnight.
