Jaimee McKinlay with Berry.

Jaimee McKinlay with Berry.

Nine-year-old Jaimee McKinlay from Woodville was second in her age group (8-11) at the Eukanuba National Dog Show held in Christchurch in September.

She had qualified to compete in the New Zealand Young Kennel Clubs Handler Competition and faced 13 competitors.

"I'm so happy," she told her mother Kim Sutcliffe, when she phoned with the news of her second placing.

"I told Jaimee to aim for the top five," her mother said.

"The event was livestreamed on the internet and it was nail-biting stuff. I'm very proud of her, its better than what we expected, against strong competition."

With the winner going up a class next year, Jaimee stands a chance of getting gold next time.

Jaimee's dog which she competed with, Banderra Regal Franklin, is a two and half year old Golden Labrador called Berry because he came from a town in Australia called Berry.

The NZYKC is a branch of the New Zealand Kennel Club and has been set up to support, mentor and train young dog handlers in the sport.

Heats are run most show weekends around the country and those who qualify at these heats are invited to the final held at the National Dog Show Week.

This year Jaimee was competing in the 8-11 year old group. She has competed in the 5-7 year group for the last two years where she placed within the top three both years.

Jaimee doesn't own a dog of her own but was introduced to the sport by her aunt who breeds and shows American Cocker Spaniels. Spaniels aren't the only dog Jaimee shows.

She has been successful in the ring with labradors, Irish setters, pointers, samoyeds, and even a lagotto romagnolo, a reasonably rare breed in NZ.

Jaimee is quick to tell you that it's hard work learning this sport, because apart from bonding with the dog you are showing, you must have some basic knowledge of the breed, as well as having an understanding of how it naturally moves and adjusting your showing style to suit.

She had been training hard for the competition and often travels to Wellington to attend show training sessions.

She loves her chosen sport and thanks everyone who supports her, by loaning dogs, transporting her to shows, offering advice, sewing her outfits and giving her a home away from home on show weekends.
