State Highway 1 was closed for a short time last Friday after a truck and a quad bike were in a collision near Glenavy.

St John and police attended the scene of the two-vehicle crash at the intersection of the highway and Carrolls Rd, 28km north of Oamaru, about 9.55am.

Sergeant Kevin Reynolds, of Waimate, said it appeared the male rider of the quad bike had attempted to turn out of Carrolls Rd on to the highway, but failed to see a southbound logging truck and was struck.

The logging truck was not carrying a load at the time of the crash.

The man, who Sgt Reynolds confirmed was wearing a helmet, was transported by ambulance to Oamaru Hospital with a moderate head injury.

Inquiries are continuing.

A car burst into flames after it was run off the road by a camper van and crashed on State Highway 85, between Coalpit Rd and Sow Valley Rd, about 7.35am yesterday.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said three fire appliances from the Ranfurly Volunteer Fire Brigade attended the incident.

The car had caught fire after crashing into a farmer's paddock, the spokesman said.

He said the brigade took about half an hour to extinguish the "small grass fire".
