Kem Ormond is a features writer for The Country. She’s also a keen gardener. This week, she’s writing about various options to add shade to your garden.

Looks like we’re in for a hot one this summer!

Before you head out to the garden, make sure you’ve got your sun hat and sunscreen handy.

The heat really starts to build from late morning, so having a shady spot is essential.

After all, you want to enjoy the outdoors, not roast.

Shade does more than keep you cool.

It turns your backyard into a comfortable space where you can kick back and relax.

There are plenty of ways to create shade, depending on your budget, space and style.

You could go for sails, awnings, louvres, laser-cut screens, greenery, timber slats, umbrellas, pergolas or even a full garden room.

Shade sails are a quick and affordable way to add character.

Just make sure you choose one big enough to cover the area and check the UV rating.

Pick a colour that suits your home, but keep in mind that bold shades fade faster in the sun.

Retractable awnings are great if you want flexibility.

They let you control shade and sunlight with ease, whether you go for a remote control or a manual crank.

They’re perfect for decks and patios.

If you’re after something more high-end, electronic louvres are hard to beat.

They let you adjust light and airflow throughout the day, and some even close automatically when it rains. They cost more than sails, but the convenience is worth it.

Laser-cut metal screens are all about style, and they are starting to become popular.

They create beautiful patterns of light and shadow, and add an arty touch.

They’re more permanent, but they don’t block UV completely, so sunscreen is still a good idea.

For a natural look, train plants like grapevines, wisteria or jasmine over a pergola for a lush canopy.

Non-fruiting grapevines are a smart choice as they give you the greenery without attracting the wasps looking for grapes!

Wooden slats are another simple option.

They won’t keep out rain, but they create lovely, dappled shade and add a sense of enclosure without breaking the bank.

Umbrellas are easy and affordable, perfect for smaller spaces or if you want something non-permanent.

Just watch out for windy days, as they can be prone to catching the wind.

Pergolas are a timeless choice.

You can leave them open, thatch them, or add tinted roofing. Climbing plants make them even better, and their design flexibility means they suit almost any home.

Garden rooms are the ultimate upgrade.

Semi-enclosed with big sliding doors, they blur the line between indoors and out.

You get the breeze and the view without sitting in full sun.

Whatever you choose, remember that summer is for relaxing, not baking.

A well-planned shady spot will keep you cool, comfortable, and ready to enjoy some socialising and alfresco dining.
