A set of bagpipes played at the first A&P show in Waikouaiti in 1866 resonated again on Saturday.

Palmerston was celebrating the 150th anniversary of the first show it hosted. It used to alternate with Waikouaiti before the event became a regular fixture in Palmerston.

Saturday's grand parade was led by a pipe band in which Oamaru piper Wee Jock Howie played the 1866 set. He acquired them in 1999 but has only just restored them to full playing order.

The pipers were followed by local dignitaries, including former Waitaki mayor Alex Familton in Victorian costume, and modes of transport from colonial times to the present day.
Waitaki deputy mayor Melanie Tavendale, speaking at the official opening, said the show was "such an incredible milestone for this community", with "an amazing group of volunteers making it happen".

Palmerston and Waihemo A&P Association president Paul Mutch and his committee have expanded the show from one day to two, with equestrian competitions held yesterday.

Historical elements featured throughout the show, from Clydesdale horses to vintage farm machinery and Caledonian sports.

Mr Mutch said Saturday's crowd was estimated at more than 3000 people, many of whom were still there at 6pm. Yesterday, "a good crowd" was relaxing around the terraces overlooking the ring where the horses were performing.

Numbers were larger than last year, he said. The show was

growing as the committee followed up community suggestions and refined processes.

"A number of people have asked to join the committee and help out with the departments. That's heartening."

And people not directly involved with the show had offered to contribute by organising a part of it or holding an exhibition, he said.
