A Central Hawke's Bay bridge closed in 2015 after it was deemed unsafe may still be being used.
The Department of Conservation closed Moncktons Bridge in 2015 because the structure was a hazard and not suitable for use.
Yet closure signs displayed on the bridge have been removed by members of the public, and people may still be using the bridge.
DoC said it had replaced the signage, but to remove the risk of injury or incident in the near future, will completely remove the Moncktons bridge structure. A replacement bridge is planned.
Connie Norgate, DOC Operations Manager for Hawke's Bay says that public safety and maintaining structures to a high standard is the Department's primary concern.
