New regulations covering the size of telecommunications equipment, and the noise it makes, have been approved and will be drafted, Environment Minister Trevor Mallard said today.
The regulations affect equipment such as antennas, masts and roadside cabinets.
Mr Mallard said there was considerable variation in current rules between
territorial authorities and the new regulations would standardise the situation.
"This is likely to speed up the rollout of telecommunications services such as high-speed internet and mobile phones," he said.
"The regulations, known as national environmental standards, will allow faster and more cost effective installation of telecommunications equipment."
