Maori domain name goes live

Nearly 200 registrations for a new web address ending in .maori.nz were recorded when the domain name went live yesterday.

The second-level internet domain name has been approved by the Internet Society. It is open to anyone to use.

Karaitiana Taiuru, spokesman for the New Zealand Maori Internet Society, Te Whanau Ipurangi, which put forward a proposal for the domain name last November, said it was pleasing to see it finally come to fruition.

He expected the domain name would be used by businesses, schools, cultural organisations and personal users. Government departments, such as Te Puni Kokiri, might also be interested in it.
