Glonass satellite system a go

The Russian Space Agency may complete its Glonass satellite system by the end of the year with the scheduled launch of eight satellites that will provide a rival system to the US-developed GPS system for the first time. Russia hopes the system will be operational by 2009.

China and Europe are also working on their own global positioning systems and will launch their own satellites to remove their dependence on the US system.
