Students and whanau from Stratford Primary School enjoyed a hangi last Friday.
Teacher Sheenagh Fairclough organised the event and says it was a really successful day. Sheenagh says every pupil contributed to the shared meal in some way and it was a great way for all pupils to learn more about Māori culture and tradition.
Friends Angela Lumanglas (10) and Mereana Kahui (9) enjoyed sitting in the sunshine with their kai. They were joined by Angela's sister Abigail (1). For Angela, it was only the second hangi she had eaten, while Mereana has "eaten loads of it, we have it all the time". Both girls agreed the meal was "delicious" and especially liked the meat. "That's why I like it, it has lots of meat in it," said Mereana. "I like the lamb best of all," agreed Angela.

Another family enjoying the day were sisters Jesse-Jane (6), Ivy (3) and Aaliyah (6) Read. "I like the pumpkin, I would eat more of that," Jesse-Jane had finished her meal in record time and was eyeing up Aaliyah's. "It's nice and I like eating in the sun like a picnic," said Aaliyah, who was enjoying the atmosphere as much as the hangi. For little sister Ivy, the chance to come along to her sisters' school was great fun and she was enjoying sitting with them and eating her hangi.
