Four volunteer firefighters from the Inglewood Fire Brigade have entered the firefighters Sky Tower Stair Climb event, taking place on May 23 this year.
The challenge will see them climb 1103 steps, up 51 flights, while wearing 25kg of kit.
A total of 750 firefighters from around New Zealand, Australia and the United States compete in the event, with the aim to raise money for the Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand, who receive no funding from the government.
Firefighter Andrew Cotter says that with six children and adults in New Zealand being diagnosed daily with a blood cancer such as leukemaia, lymphoma or myeloma, he and his team mates, Leighton Hunt, Craig Pyler and Danny Chapman, are determined to raise as much money as possible for the cause.
The funds raised are used to support work in our community giving personalised support for patients and their families, and Andrew says this work can include everything from visits to being at the end of the phone to provide emotional and practical support as needed.
