People are being urged to stay off the roads, including SH45, in and around Opunake today following flooding after heavy rain overnight.
Some roads are being closed, while others remain marginal.
Opunake's three schools, and the public library, are closed today, and there are reports of isolated flooding of some houses, with residents self-evacuating.
Taranaki Civil Defence Emergency Management has been activated and is monitoring the situation.
A Civil Defence Centre has been opened at Sanford Event Centre for those needing assistance.
