A state of emergency is still in place in Taranaki because of the flooding in Waitotara township in South Taranaki.
Residents were evacuated from Waitotara township between 9pm and 10 pm on Saturday evening. Some residents were evacuated to Waverley and provided accommodation overnight. South Taranaki District Council staff are assessing a number of flooded houses before people return to them.
Taranaki Civil Defence Emergency Management says a helicopter will fly into the Waitotara Valley to assess conditions and respond to two requests for assistance.
Meanwhile, there are many disruptions to the highway network in the region. SH3 remains closed at Mt Messenger north of Waitara, and at Waitotara. There are also slips and flooding on local roads. People are advised to take care when driving.
In Stratford, the flooding on Miranda St has cleared. Slips have blocked several rural roads, and morotists are advised to drive with caution in the area. Check the Stratford District Council website for updates.
