It's Taranaki's action attraction and it is famous for roaring into action most weekends.
Stratford Speedway was last year listed by Venture Taranaki as one of the Must Dos in Taranaki, and it certainly is an experience to recommend to your visitors.
But, if you haven't yet been, here is your
chance to win a pass for two to the races.
The speedway runs for five months of the year and each race, without exception, offers great racing and crowd-pleasing antics, whether it is door-to-door racing in the saloons, aerobatics by the midgets or hard-hitting stockcars that make you cringe.
It has been a favourite in Taranaki and Stratford for 48 years.
It is now the only speedway track in Taranaki and home to some of New Zealand's top drivers.
Modified driver Bunter Pierce last weekend won the New Zealand modified championship and Tony Zehnder placed fifth at the New Zealand stockcar champs at the end of last year.
It is a haven for any car enthusiast and is guaranteed to keep children entertained for the whole night.
``We have a very dedicated club that is committed to providing great entertainment in a safe environment,'' says
Stratford Speedway president Scott (Mooman) Shaw.
Scott races in the adult ministock class and his son has also been behind the wheel.
``Since speedway started, there have been generations of drivers. People that came as kids now have their own family, and their children are coming through and getting into it.
``It's fantastic to see.''
Meetings are held most Saturday nights October to April and include some big nights of racing.
The track already has been host to a stockcar teams race and the saloon grand prix, and next month will be hosting the under-23 title, which will see some of New Zealand's top young drivers vying for
honours.
``There's going to be plenty of testosterone on the track and some talented drivers eager to take the title. It's one not to miss,'' says Scott.
The track, located at the Stratford A&P showgrounds, has come along way since opening in 1964/1965 with 14 stockcars racing in the first meeting.
The club holds 24 national titles - more than any other club.
Highlights of the season usually include fireworks in early November, the Boxing Day Demolition Derby and the
national championship meetings.
The 380-metre track is tackled only by dedicated drivers who put long hours and dollar after dollar into their pride and joy.
Although the sport may be seen as male territory, the club is seeing increasing numbers of females joining, with around 13 currently taking on the males - and they don't back down.
To go into the draw to win a pass for two to the races, phone, email or Facebook the Stratford Press on
Monday 9am to 5pm.
