A delicious hakari consisting of pumpkin soup and rewena bread was served to the children at Koru Kindergarten as part of their unit of learning and discovery around the theme of Matariki.
Teacher Karina Bolton says the youngsters have been talking about the stars and constellations as part of the unit, as well as exploring ideas about the relationship between themselves and the earth around them.
Pumpkins were grown at the kindergarten, with the children involved in all parts of the process, from planting to weeding, watering and harvesting.
The final, perhaps most enjoyable part of the process, came on Thursday last week when they got to taste the fruits of their labour as the vegetable was transformed into some delicious soup served with rewena bread.
The soup, made by staff at the kindergarten, and the bread, made by students at Whaimana Ako the teen parent unit at Stratford High School, was popular with the preschoolers, who soon had empty plates, full tummies, and as our picture shows - big smiles on their faces.
