While the hunting season for ducks has finished, gamebird hunters can still target pheasant and quail (with a daily bag limit of two for pheasant and five for quail) and also pukeko (daily bag limit of 10 per hunter in Taranaki).
Pukeko can cause some problems for farmers at maizeplanting in particular and they can also peck holes in silage wrap. The extended season encourages hunters and farmers to get together and reduce pukeko numbers where they have been building up and causing damage.
