The Stratford District Council is investigating whether it has to register for Nait as it from time to time has to hold stray farm animals.
This follows a discussion at the recent meeting of the Institute of Animal Control Officers hosted by Stratford for the first time.
"We pick up
sheep and cattle wandering. We cannot find the owners, we need to sell them and that can be a problem under Nait. We are investigating who will then be the owner under Nait," says Stratford council's Karen Best, who is also president of the Institute of Animal Control Officers' central branch.
He says they have not been in the conundrum yet, but wants the loophole covered before it happens.
A Nait spokesperson told the Stratford Press "any organisation with responsibility for cattle over a period of time has to register with the Nait scheme and get a Nait number".
